What is Temporary E-Scoring?
Temporary E-Scoring allows a Team Manager to quickly give someone access to score a game without needing a PlayHQ account or the NetballHQ app.
This is ideal when a parent, spectator or volunteer is helping with scoring on game day.
With Temporary Scoring, you simply generate a secure link and send it to your scorer. They can open the link in their web browser and begin scoring, no sign in or app download required.
Before inviting a temporary scorer, make sure you have:
- The scorer's first and last name
- A way to send them the scoring link (SMS, email or messaging app)
- Their device available when you create the link
- A competition or grade where club scoring is enabled
Tip: Generate the link only when your scorer has the device they'll be using. The link only works on the first device it is opened on.
Inviting a temporary scorer and sharing the link
Step 1: Open your game
Open the NetballHQ app and navigate to:
Team → Select your game
Tap the Game Actions menu (⋮).
Step 2: Select Invite Scorer
Tap Invite Scorer.
This option is only available to Team Managers and/or Participants with management access.
Note: It will only appear if scoring has been enabled for your competition or grade.
Step 3: Enter the scorer's details
Enter the scorer's First Name and Last Name. Once both fields have been completed, tap Done.
Important: If you close the screen before tapping Done, the invitation won't be created.
Step 4: Share the scoring link
After confirming, a unique scoring link will be generated.
Choose either Copy Link to paste it into your own message, or Share to send it using your device's sharing options. A message containing the game details and scoring link is automatically prepared for you.
Once the scorer opens the link, they'll go straight to the scoring screen in their browser. No PlayHQ account or NetballHQ app is required.
Only one active scoring link can exist for a game at any time.
If you need to invite a different scorer:
- Open Invite Scorer again.
- Generate a new link.
- Confirm that you want to replace the existing link.
Important: Creating a new link immediately disables the previous one. If the original scorer was already using it, they'll lose access.
When scoring access is available
A scoring link can be created at any time, but access depends on when the game is scheduled.

| Within 15 minutes of the scheduled start | The scorer can begin scoring immediately. |
| After the game result has been submitted | The link expires and can no longer be used. |
Access closes automatically once the game result is submitted.
Device-specific links
Each scoring link only works on the first device it is opened on. If the scorer forwards the link to someone else, or opens it on another device, the link will not work.
Simply generate a new link for the new scorer or device.
Important considerations
Impact on reporting and team sheets
When you invite a temporary scorer, their name is recorded against the game as a volunteer. The scorer's name, the game they scored, and the Team Manager who invited them are also recorded for volunteer reporting.
The scorer's name will appear on the team sheet and in the Admin Portal as the scorer for that game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can invite a temporary scorer?
Only Team Managers and participants with management access can invite a temporary scorer. The feature is only available where club scoring has been enabled for the competition or grade.
Does the scorer need a PlayHQ account?
No. They simply open the link in their web browser and begin scoring.
Do they need the NetballHQ app?
No. Everything is completed through their web browser.
Can I send the link by text or email?
Yes. Use Share to send the link through your preferred messaging app or email, or select Copy Link to send it manually.
Can the scorer use a different phone?
No. The link is locked to the first device it is opened on. If they change devices, you'll need to generate a new link.
What if I need to change scorers?
Generate a new scoring link. This will immediately disable the previous link.
Can I have multiple scoring links for the same game?
No. Only one active scoring link can exist for a game.
What happens if the scorer opens the link too early?
If the game is more than 15 minutes away, they'll see a message advising that the game is not yet available for scoring.
What happens after the game finishes?
Once the game result has been submitted, the scoring link expires and can no longer be used.
